3 Treatments You Might Need Before Getting Dental Implants
Dental implants in Minneapolis, MN are very popular. Many people enjoy what they hear about the procedure and want to take advantage of all the benefits. However, not everyone is going to be able to get a dental implant immediately. Our periodontist will examine your oral health to see if another treatment is required before you can be considered a candidate for implants.
Bone Grafting
The success of a dental implant is entirely dependent on the strength of the jaw bone. Some patients will have a jaw bone that has weakened or deteriorated over time. This means it would be unable to support a titanium structure being inserted within it. This involves taking bone tissue from elsewhere and grafting it onto the jaw, so it regains some strength.
Socket Preservation
As soon as a tooth is lost, the jaw bone will begin to deteriorate. Over time, this can increase a patient’s chances of needing a bone grafting. However, those chances can be reduced if a socket preservation procedure is sought. This treatment is more commonly done immediately following a dental extraction so that the jaw bone can be preserved until the implant procedure is scheduled.
Sinus Lift
Dental implants can be inserted anywhere in the mouth. Sometimes they need to be placed directly under where your sinus is located. This portion of the jaw is going to be naturally weaker than the rest of the bone because it is closer to the sinuses and therefore thinner. A similar procedure to that of a bone grafting will be done to make the bone strong enough to support an implant.
