Five Ways to Avoid Gum Disease
If you have swollen, tender, and/or bleeding gums, you may be developing a condition known as gum disease. It can range from gingivitis, a beginning stage of gum disease, that makes brushing painful all the way to periodontitis that can lead to teeth falling out. No one is immune to gum disease, and knowing how to prevent it can save you time, money and pain in the future.
1. Regular Brushing
The same concepts apply to preventing gum disease as to caring for your teeth. Brush regularly, especially after every meal, to remove plaque and food that is stuck between your gums and teeth. Make sure to scrub your tongue to remove bacteria that hides there.
2. Flossing
Flossing is one of the most important ways to combat gum disease, as it removes plaque and food particles that live between your gum line and the teeth that the toothbrush can’t get to. Make sure to floss at least once a day.
3. Use Mouthwash
Mouthwash does more than freshen your breath; it can also reduce plaque that exists on your teeth after a meal. While mouthwash doesn’t replace brushing and flossing, adding it to your regimen can be helpful.
4. Beware Risk Factors
Some patients are at a greater risk for developing gum disease. Smoking, genetics, diet and age are all factors that may increase your chances. Those who are at an increased risk should speak to a dental health professional as soon as possible.
5. See a Professional
Gum disease can often be reversed if treated early, but the consequences are more severe the longer it goes untreated. See your new periodontist in Eden Prairie, MN regularly to ensure that your teeth and gums are as healthy as they should be.
