Tooth Pain Explained
When your teeth begin to hurt, it is not always easy to pinpoint the exact problem. There are many different types of tooth pain, and the treatment may differ depending on what is at the root cause of the problem. If you experience any tooth discomfort that worries you, schedule an appointment to see Dr. Andrés R. Sánchez as soon as possible. Here are some common types of tooth pain and some possible causes.
Types of Tooth Pain and Their Causes
- Hot and Cold Sensitivity. If the sensitivity is brief, it could be something as simple as a small cavity, loose filling, or slightly exposed root. If you have recently had dental treatment, the tooth might be sensitive for a while following a procedure. For lingering pain, there may be advanced decay in the tooth and gums that could lead to gum disease requiring fast treatment. Keep your teeth and gums clean by brushing with a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Your periodontist may recommend a deep cleaning.
- Sharp Pain When Biting Down. This type of pain is usually associated with decay such as a cavity, a loose filling, or a broken tooth.
- Dull Ache in Teeth and Sinus Pressure. This could be caused by clenching or grinding the teeth, TMJ, or even a severe cold.
- Constant Acute Pain. This is typically due to infected pulp tissue and may require root canal therapy.
- Constant Severe Pain. This may be infected pulp tissue that has spread the infection or turned into an abscess. If you do not receive immediate attention by a dental professional this could lead to a tooth extraction and a dental implant.
