In the past, patients with gingival recession had to undergo traditional gum grafting to achieve long-lasting results. At our Eden Prairie, MN dental practice, we offer PRF RenovaGum Rejuvenation Technique, a microsurgical technique invented by Dr. Andres R. Sanchez. This procedure is less invasive and more natural than traditional gum grafting and the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ (PST). Using a combination of an enriched collagen matrix, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and other biologic growth factors, Dr. Sanchez can achieve similar results while causing far less trauma to the oral soft tissues.

About Platelet-Rich Fibrin

Platelet-rich fibrin has been used successfully for years in the medical field, in specialties such as orthopedics, cardiology, and plastic surgery. Now, PRF is used in the dental field as well. At PerioWest, we use PRF to promote the body’s own natural healing processes, reduce the risk of infection, and expedite faster recovery. It is often used during procedures such as gum surgery, tooth extractions, or dental implant placement. It is especially useful for those with medical conditions that hinder healing due to reduced blood flow, such as diabetes.

PRF RenovaGum Rejuvenation Technique vs Conventional Gum Grafting

Traditional gum grafting involves taking tissue from the roof of the mouth and moving it to areas where receding gums are problematic. This technique, while effective, can be uncomfortable and painful. During a PRF RenovaGum Rejuvenation, there is no need to harvest tissue from the palate. Instead, Dr. Sanchez soaks enriched collagen strips in PRF, then places the strips over the exposed teeth roots. As a result, healthy gum tissue regenerates and attaches to the affected teeth over time.

How is Platelet-Rich Fibrin Obtained?

One of the most significant advantages of PRF is that it is obtained from your own blood. Because it is natural, there is no risk of allergic reaction. To obtain PRF, Dr. Sanchez takes a small sample of your blood, then spins it in a centrifuge. This separates the different components of the blood: white blood cells, red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Dr. Sanchez uses both the platelets and the fibrin to accelerate healing to a marked degree.

Who is a Candidate for the PRF RenovaGum Rejuvenation Technique?

If you have receding gums, you could be eligible for PRF RenovaGum Rejuvenation. During an initial consultation at PerioWest, Dr. Sanchez will perform a comprehensive oral evaluation to determine your candidacy. While most individuals can safely undergo this procedure, those taking certain medications or those with blood-clotting diseases may not be eligible for this type of treatment.

If Dr. Sanchez clears you for PRF treatment, a blood sample will be drawn on the day of your surgical appointment. Once the PRF matrix is prepared, it will be applied directly to the surgical site once the sutures are placed. This will not only accelerate healing, it will also reduce post-surgical discomfort.

Benefits of PRF Regenerative Therapy

There are a variety of benefits to using PRF in oral surgery procedures. For example, this treatment:

  • Is safe and effective
  • Improves wound healing
  • Accelerates recovery time
  • Reduces discomfort and the risk for post-operative infection
  • Increases bone and tissue regeneration
